Knowing Who You Are Matters More Than Where You’re Going

By Lisa Bevere

How often do we get caught up in the question, “Where am I headed? What’s next for my life?” We want direction. We crave clarity. We long for God to hand us a map so we can know exactly where we’re going. But what if we’ve been asking the wrong question?

Why Identity in Christ Comes Before Direction

God is far more concerned with who you are becoming than where you are going. Your identity in Him will always carry you further than your own plans ever could.
When you know who you are—beloved, chosen, called—you stop chasing validation from the world. You stop comparing your journey to someone else’s highlight reel. And you stop letting fear dictate your decisions. Instead, you begin to walk in confidence, because your steps are ordered by the One who formed you.

Scripture reminds us:

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart.” —Jeremiah 1:5

God isn’t surprised by your story. He already knows the path before you, but He wants your heart to be secure in Him first. Because when you know who you are in Christ, the “where” will always fall into place.

How Embracing Your God-Given Identity Brings Clarity and Confidence

In a world full of comparison and competition, it’s easy to forget that God has written a story for you that no one else can live. You don’t have to fight for someone else’s place—you just need to step fully into who He has created you to be.

So today, stop striving to figure out every detail of tomorrow. Rest in this truth: your identity is found in Him. Out of that identity flows calling, courage, and clarity.

You don’t need to know the destination when you’re walking hand in hand with the One who holds the map.
